Department of International and European Economic Studies - Overview

The Department of International and European Economic Studies (D.I.E.E.S.) belongs to the Athens University of Economics and Business.Taught courses commenced for the first time during the academic year 1990-1991.

The academic aim of DIEES is to promote and convey knowledge in the field of International and European Economic Relations. We aim at creating graduates that comprehend and also meet the special needs of Greece in the field of International Economics with a special emphasis on European Union economic and political aspects. The aim is achieved by promoting research and teaching methods in a way that correspond fully to modern social and scientific needs.

Our curriculum extends over a wide range of academic subjects related not only to the field of economics but also to those of relevant social sciences. The studies program is structured to promote the formation of economists and financial experts who are more focused and proficient in the fields of International Economics, International Relations and International Law than those who have a degree from an economics department.

The departmental studies program consists of 40 academic courses that are taught by the staff of the department, two additional seminars on the introduction and use of IT tools, foreign language teaching courses and a final-year dissertation. Furthermore, there are a number of optional courses on offer by the other University departments as well as English taught courses for non-Greek speaking students. All optional courses are taught during the last two years of study. Students are able by their selection of these courses to specialize in their field of interest. The optional courses belong to two thematic categories that correspond to the two basic specializations of the studies program. Students are requested to select either of them. The two specializations are:

  1. International Economics and Finance, and
  2. International and European Political Economy

The interdisciplinary structure of our studies program extends over both core and optional courses. The students of the department are given the ability to select additional courses of relevant sciences (e.g. Business Management, Law and Politics, International Relations, etc). In consequence, our degree holders are in a position to adapt competently to the demands of the business market both on a national and European scale.
